This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A585563. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The end of the Cold War era of bipolarity has raised many important questions concerning the role of the United States in the Balkans. The United States and its NATO allies have made various commitments regarding the security challenges that have arisen in that region since the early 1990's. The United States declared its support for political and economic reform in Bulgaria and committed its attention and resources to promote Sofia's engagement in Western security institutions. The main U.S. interest in the Balkans, including in Bulgaria, is to maintain the region's stability and security, so that conflicts there do not affect U.S. interests in Western Europe and the Middle East. America's security interests in the Balkans stem from the new role it plays as a major guardian of international order and from the objectives flowing from this role - promoting democracy and free-market economic systems. It is therefore in the interests of the United States to support political and economic reform in post-communist Bulgaria.
