O Fairest Monticello is the history of Monticello College and Preparatory School of Godfrey, Illinois, one of the earliest true colleges for women in the U.S. It was founded by Capt. Benjamin Godfrey in 1838, with a curriculum based on Yale's, and closed in 1971. The beautiful, park-like campus with its huge stone buildings looked like a bit of New England magically transported to the plains of Illinois. Monticello was internationally known for academic excellence and its alumnae all over the world still think of themselves as Monti Girls.
